Columbus was the first European to visit the Cayman islands, he called the islands Tortugas, after the herds of turtles he found . For centuries, the turtles were a source of fresh meat and were hunted until their numbers dwindled. A later adventurer renamed the group Cayman - the Amerindian word for crocodile - many of which lived around Little Cayman.
Did you know the barrier reef off the coast of Belize is almost 185 miles long and comes within 10-40 miles of the mainland, making it the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere.
Early explorers called Bermuda "the isle of Devils" because its surrounding reefs and occasional winter storms wreaked havoc on dozens of ships.
Granada which is know as the spice island throughout the Caribbean , actually has more spices per square mile than any other place in the world. These spices include cloves, cinnamon, mace, cocoa, ginger. Grenada also grows a third of the worlds nutmeg. |
The island of Jamaica has 120 rivers, including the Rio Grande in Port Antonio which is the birthplace of bamboo rafting and the white river through which James Bond waded in Doctor No.
The Caribbean sea is the fifth largest body of water with a total area of 970,000 square miles it is slightly bigger than the Mediterranean.
The Dominican Republic lays claim to both the highest and lowest points in the Caribbean basin. Pico Duarte rises to some 10,417 feet/3,125 meters above sea level and is occasionally dusted with snow in the winter. Lago Enriquillo, a large, brackish lake, is some 130 feet/39 meters below sea level, the lowest land point in the Caribbean
The Boiling Lake, near the Valley of Desolation in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park is the second largest boiling lake in the world, with temperatures that hover between 82° and 92° C (180° and 197° F). |
